How to Make Cold Brew Coffee at Home (The Right Way)
Share
If you’ve ever wondered why your café cold brew tastes smoother, bolder, and less acidic than anything you’ve made at home — it’s not magic. It’s method.
Here’s exactly how to make cold brew coffee the right way, using the same steeping process we use at Birch Glen Roasters.
🧊 What You’ll Need
-
Coarsely ground cold brew coffee (try our Dark Roast or Flavored Bags)
-
Cold, filtered water
-
A large mason jar, French press, or cold brew pitcher
-
Cheesecloth, metal strainer, or paper filter
📖 Cold Brew Ratio
-
1 cup coffee : 4 cups water = strong, concentrate-style
-
1:6 to 1:8 = ready-to-drink strength
⏳ Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Grind your beans coarse.
Like breadcrumbs, not sand. Too fine = bitter. -
Combine with cold water.
Stir gently to ensure all grounds are wet. -
Cover & steep.
Steep 12–18 hours in the fridge or at room temp. -
Strain well.
Use a cheesecloth or mesh strainer. No one wants gritty sips. -
Serve & store.
Pour over ice, dilute to taste, and store in the fridge for up to 7–10 days.
🔁 Reuse Tips
-
Don’t reuse the grounds — they’ll taste flat.
-

🧠 Flavor Add-Ins
-
Vanilla bean, cinnamon stick, or orange peel while steeping
-
A splash of oat or coconut milk post-brew
-
Try flavored brews like Snickerdoodle for built-in flavor without syrups
Cold brew is a ritual — but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Get the ratio right, steep patiently, and use the right beans, and you’ll never need a café again.
